Our Story
Awayco, founded by entrepreneur Gideon Gut-Silverman in 2018, emerged as a groundbreaking solution to an environmental crisis plaguing the outdoor sports industry. The company's initial focus was on creating a rental software business that would revolutionize the way surfers and snowboarders accessed their favourite gear.
Driven by a passion for sustainability and the circular economy, Awayco's innovative platform allowed enthusiasts to hire high-quality surfboards and snowboards without the need for ownership. This approach not only reduced the environmental impact of manufacturing excess equipment but also democratised access to premium gear for riders of all levels.
As the company gained traction, it caught the attention of industry giants like Patagonia, who piloted the Awayco platform in the United States. This partnership validated the concept and paved the way for Awayco's expansion into a broader e-commerce solution.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented both challenges and opportunities for Awayco. Recognising the shifting landscape of consumer behaviour and retail operations, Gut-Silverman and his team pivoted their strategy. They evolved the platform to address the bigger picture of modern consumer demands, unifying retail, rental, and appointment experiences into a seamless solution.
Today, Awayco has transformed into a comprehensive e-commerce platform, serving hundreds of retailers across various industries. The company's journey from a niche rental service to a unified commerce solution exemplifies its adaptability and commitment to innovation.
In 2023, Awayco secured $4 million in funding, led by Thorney Investment Group and high-net-worth individuals. This investment has positioned the company to scale its suite of e-commerce applications and expand its team, furthering its mission to revolutionise the retail industry.
This round enabled Awayco to acquire Australia’s Remi AI, a leading Artificial Intelligence company specialising in retail optimisation. The Remi AI team joined Awayco midway through 2024 and has helped accelerate it’s technological roadmap.
